Apprenticeship: Officer of the Watch Near Coastal under 500gt
We are recruiting for a Level 3 apprenticeship, which allows the apprentice to become an "OOW Near Coastal". We follow the “standard MCA-approved program for OOW” section 6 in MSN 1856 to gain OOW COC.
This course is run over 3 years, time will be spent aboard as well as living on campus at Fleetwood nautical college. The apprentices work under the supervision of experienced colleagues and learn a variety of skills related to their field of study.
This Apprenticeship is a way to learn a profession while earning a salary, often it's a pathway to become a fully qualified Officer of the Watch and progress into a career onboard our tugs.
The objective of the position after finalizing the course
The Officer of the Watch (near Coastal under 500gt) assists the Master and Engineer to ensure the vessel is ready to perform safe and optimal towing services. In this role, you will report to the Tug Master.
Your key tasks will include: providing assistance during towing operations, maintaining ropes and gear to ensure they are in good condition and ready for use, keeping them properly stored when not in use, assisting both Master and Engineer in keeping the tug maintained and ready for operations by performing maintenance, repair, and cleaning of the tug, both in- and outside and cook meals, administering catering and cleaning supplies stock and ensure ordering, performing watch keeping duties when required, reporting unsafe situations and actions to contribute to increased safety and awareness, and participating in safety drills on a regular basis.
What type of applicant are we looking for?
- Passion for the maritime industry
- 5 GCSE’s which must include English, Math’s, and Science. Grade 5 and above
- Capable of passing a Medical ENG 1
- Minimum age requirement - 17+
