Are you passionate about maritime training, governance, and supporting local communities? The Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) is seeking a dedicated volunteer to take on the role of Chair of Council.
About Us:
The MVS is a national, uniformed, self-funding charity with 22 Units and 400 members along the UK coastline, from the Isle of Wight to the Scottish border and Northern Ireland. We train our members in maritime skills, support Harbour Authorities under the Port Marine Safety Code, assist Local Councils in resilience, and engage with our communities.
Role Overview:
As Chair of Council, you will play a key leadership role in the governance of MVS, ensuring the charity continues to thrive and fulfil its mission. This is a voluntary position with a focus on charity governance, requiring strong leadership, decision-making, and ambassadorial skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Chair all meetings of the Council of Trustees.
Serve as a Director on the MVS Council and Board of the Limited Liability by Guarantee Company (No. 3003565).
Act as a Trustee for the charity (Registered in England & Wales No. 1048454, Scotland SC 039269).
Oversee reports to Companies House, the Charity Commission, and the Office of the Scottish Charities Register.
Represent MVS to external bodies and act as the final authority for adjudication.
Promote MVS as an ambassador and support its growth and engagement.
What We’re Looking For:
Experience in governance, leadership, or charity management.
Strong communication, decision-making, and strategic thinking skills.
A commitment to the mission and values of the MVS.
Ability to work remotely with access to email, phone, and filing facilities.
Commitment & Conditions:
Initial three-year term, with potential for extension.
Voluntary position (no contract of employment implied).
Expected to attend MVS Council meetings, AGM, and working groups.
Ability to delegate duties to a Vice Chair when necessary.
