The Maritime Volunteer Service is a national, uniformed, self-funding charity with 22 Units and 400 members based around the coasts of the UK stretching from the I.O.W. to the Scottish border and NI.
We train our members in the maritime arts, leading to RYA qualifications; support Harbour Authorities under the Port Marine Safety Code; Local Councils in Resilience and our Local Communities.
We are not averse to making membership an enjoyable experience for all, regardless of skills.

Description: TR002 – Chair of Council
Primary tasks
- To chair the Council of the Maritime Volunteer Service.
- To serve as a Director on the MVS Council.
- To serve as a Director on the Board of the Limited Liability by Guarantee Company, number 3003565,
- To serve as a Trustee for the Charity Registered in England and Wales No. 1048454 and in Scotland SC 039269
- To maintain “cabinet collective responsibility”

Conditions of Service
- This is a voluntary position, and no contract of employment exists or is implied
- The post is primarily that of Charity Governance.
- An initial appointment for a three-year period with possible subsequent three-year extensions
- The appointment may be terminated by the chair or by a quorate meeting of council giving three calendar months’ notice, or by the expiry of the agreed period of appointment, as appropriate
Authority
- To chair all the meetings of the Council of Trustees, which is similar to a Board.
- To review and approve all reports by the MVS to Companies House, the Charity Commission of England and Wales and the Office of the Scottish Charities Register
- To act as the final authority for adjudication
- May represent the MVS to external bodies
- May delegate such duties as they determine to a Vice Chair.

Reports:
They will present a summary of the year’s proceedings to the MVS Annual General Meeting.
Support:
They are expected to work from home. They must have access to telephone, e-mail access and filing facilities,
Secondary Tasks
- The Chair is expected to attend MVS Council meetings and AGM and may attend committees of Council / Working Groups.
2. To promote the MVS whenever appropriate as an ambassador for the cause and promotion of the MVS
