£46,353 - £55,842 – the band minimum is the normal starting pay for those new to a role.   In exceptional circumstances, when relevant skills and experience can be identified, a higher starting salary may be considered.

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Electrical Technical Officer (ETO) to join the crew of the RRS Sir David Attenborough. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. You’ll be joining close knit team of the RRS Sir David Attenborough as it carries out scientific research across the polar regions. The ship is world leading in its scientific capabilities and regularly carries out science trials across the world with a driven focus on the Antarctic regions.

You’ll help us to deliver efficient maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment used throughout the ship. You will play a role assisting the Polar Chief Engineer with all onboard IT requirements including the maintenance of PMS System in conjunction with BAS Cambridge.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop role specific skills to compliment your time on the ship. There will also be standard training provided that is specially developed for Polar travel.  

You’ll be joining a world-leading interdisciplinary research organisation, that is committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support, you need to thrive at BAS.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

• Operation and maintenance of main switchboards, electrical power distribution systems, navigation and communications equipment. Including domestic, daughter craft & LSA equipment.
• To ensure that all electrical and electronic equipment assigned to his care is maintained to Statutory and Class requirements/standards where relevant, and to comply with the IEE/IET Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships with Recommended Practice for their Implementation.
• To manage and be the maintainer of the GMDSS radio station and communications equipment
• To operate and execute the planned maintenance system for such equipment, and maintain records accordingly.

For the role of Electrical Technical Officer we are looking for someone who has:

• Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions
• UK ETO CoC / CEC
• Four Elements of STCW basic training to STCW 2010, as amended (PST, FPFF, EFA & PSSR)
• Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
