British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Electrical Technical Officer - Comms/Nav (ETO) to join the crew of the RRS Sir David Attenborough. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining close knit team of the RRS Sir David Attenborough as it carries out scientific research across the polar regions. The ship is world leading in its scientific capabilities and regularly carries out science trials across the world with a driven focus on the Antarctic regions.
You’ll help us to deliver efficient maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment used throughout the ship. You will play a role assisting the Polar Chief Engineer with all onboard IT requirements including the maintenance of PMS System in conjunction with BAS Cambridge.
Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop role specific skills to compliment your time on the ship. There will also be standard training provided that is specially developed for Polar travel.

Your main responsibilities will include:
- To ensure that all electrical and electronic equipment assigned to their care is maintained to statutory and Class requirements/standards where relevant, and to follow the IEE/IET Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships with Recommended Practice for their Implementation.
- To be responsible for the care and maintenance of Bridge electrical/electronic equipment under their control, assisted by the Electrical Technical Officer (ETO) as required.
- To operate and implement the Planned Maintenance System on Equipment and Systems for which they are responsible for. To maintain and update PMS Records accordingly.
- To manage the Planned Maintenance System on board and liaise with shore side PMS management.
- To be prepared to react in a timely and professional manner to assigned equipment failure or emergency situation when alerted.
For the role of Electrical Technical Officer we are looking for someone who has:
- Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) or Equivalent, Without restrictions
- Four Elements of STCW basic training to STCW 2010, as amended (PST, FPFF, EFA & PSSR)
- GMDSS General Operators Certificate
- Electronic Navigation Equipment Maintenance Certificate
- GMDSS Radio Maintenance Certificate
