What will you do?
The Master has the overall responsibility and ultimate authority to ensure the safety of the vessel, crew and cargo, and protection of the Environment. He shall safeguard the interests of the Company to the fullest extent of his authority.
- In the absence of the Senior Master and in conjunction with the duty Chief Engineer compliance with all Class and Flag certification and arranging necessary surveys to maintain all certification.
- Ensures that all statutory legislation affecting the vessel under his command is complied with at all times.
- The Master has the responsibility of everyday management and running of the vessel. The Master is the Company’s on board representative and is responsible for implementing the Company Safety, Health and Environmental Policy and ensuring compliance with the Company Safety Management System.
- The Master shall understand that nothing contained within the Company Safety Management System is to be construed in any way to relieve him of his full responsibility of command, for the safe navigation of his ship, for maintenance of the vessel’s hull, machinery, equipment and accommodation, maintenance of discipline on board and the efficient shipboard administration and organisation.
- Responsible for managing all identified risk to ship, personnel and environment and establish appropriate safeguards.
- He has the overall responsibility for the entire safe and efficient operation of the ship, the welfare, discipline and training of the ship's crew and ensuring that the officers of all departments efficiently discharge their duties.
- The Master will abide by the instructions and guidelines given to him by the Company`s Fleet Manager and/or Safety Manager.
- The Master is to assure himself that the ship is always safely manned. The Master shall not allow the ship to sail with an Officer holding an invalid or out of date Certificate of Competency for the duties that the said Officer is required to perform.
- The Master is encouraged to provide Deck Officers with opportunities to train in ship handling.
- The Master is encouraged to provide Deck Apprentices with opportunities to train in bridge procedures.
- Ensures that reporting procedures towards the Company follow the Company`s requirement.
- Perform frequent inspection rounds of the vessel and accommodation.
- Ensures that, before going to sea, the vessel is fully found and provided for in all respects and suitable as regards stability, stress and trim.
- Ensuring that the vessel is navigated in accordance with the principles of good seamanship and as required by legislation and the Company.
- Participating in the routine daily navigation of the vessel and personally take charge of navigation at all times when the safety of the vessel may be at risk.
- Ensuring that the vessel has all the necessary certification and documentation to allow the vessel to trade effectively and to ensure the validity of the documentation is maintained. The Master shall inform the Company before the renewal date of impending surveys.
- Acts according to his responsibility as defined within the vessel`s safety organisation.
- Acts on and report according to the vessel`s maintenance program.
- The Master is responsible for the implementation of the Planned Maintenance System, ensuring maintenance, tests and checks are carried out.
- The Master is also responsible for the status and review of the Planned Maintenance System, and the correct and proper maintenance of records.
- Represents the Company in relations to, and ensure a smooth cooperation with Class Societies, local Authorities, external contractors and other cooperation partners concerning the Deck Department`s business.
- Co-operate with, and inform the HR Department in order to recruit competent and skilful personal.
- Motivates the Crew and ensures they are complying with the Company`s Safety Management System.
- Regularly informs the Deck Crew about the department`s financial status.
- Update shipyard survey list.
- Ensure compliance with the Company purchasing requirements.
- Be familiar with the relevant parts, procedures and requirements of the SMS contained within the Docmap system
Qualifications and experience
- A Master’s Unlimited Ticket
- Strong ship handling skills
- Sea time in a command role
- Passenger Vessel experience
