Job description
UK Technical Services Navigation (TSN) is part of UKMS within the MCA. TSN supports Government's maritime strategy for 'Safer Ships and Cleaner Seas' by ensuring high standards of marine safety and marine environmental protection through the development, implementation and monitoring of a consistent policy for UK navigation and radio-communication matters. This primarily covers SOLAS Convention Chapters IV and V (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea,1974); the COLREG (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 “the COLREGs”); associated EU legislation and the ITU Convention (International Telecommunications Union Convention).
The Navigation team sits within TSN and has particular responsibilities around SOLAS V and COLREG, Marine Licensing and Consenting consultations including Space Launch Activities, Offshore Renewable Energy Installations, the Port Marine Safety Code, UK Categorisation of Waters, and Vessel Traffic Management.
As the Nautical Policy Manager, you will effectively manage UK Navigation Policy and act as a focal point for the UK Administrations International & Statutory obligations that arise from SOLAS Chapter V & COLREGs. The post holder leads the Nautical Policy team to set the direction of MCA Nautical and Navigation policy as senior policy manager, including the direction and oversight over the development of MASS navigation policy. This is a pivotal period to be involved in shaping UK policy as disruptive technologies emerge within maritime navigation.
You will manage the MCA’s industry navigation stakeholder relationships and regular engagement with industry and other governmental bodies to feed into UK policy and international representation at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The Technical Services Navigation Branch is a multi-disciplinary team of professionals working to further safety in the maritime domain. As such it is the aim of the branch to recruit and retain talent by maintaining a family friendly environment and excellent work life balance.
This role can be based in any of the advertised offices. MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work. Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a maritime professional to improve their work/life balance with a less disruptive work pattern.
On occasion, there will be a requirement to work outside of normal conditioned hours.
Work/Travel on official duty within the UK and short term visits overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home. A passport valid for international travel is required.

Qualifications
- An MCA Recognised STCW II/2 Master unlimited Certificate of Competency
- Qualification at Level 5 or above of the England, Wales and Northern Ireland register of Regulated Qualifications (e.g FdSc, DipHE, HND), or recognized equivalent
