Who we are:
As a part of Warsash Maritime School (Southampton Solent University), Safety Training provide commercial education, training and consultancy services to the international maritime and offshore industries. We are based on the Warsash Campus (SO31 9ZL) and train students from cadet level to Chief Engineer/Master (maritime courses) and new joiners to experienced personnel (offshore and renewables courses) in the 4 Safety Training portfolio areas:
- Fire Fighting
- Maritime (Survival craft, Sea survival and Fast Rescue Boat)
- Medical (first aid and medical care)
- Offshore (including Helicopter Underwater Escape training (HUET))
Our Vacancy:
We have a vacancy for a Technician Instructor to assist with delivery of all Maritime & Offshore Pier and Pool Courses plus take charge of equipment service, repair and maintenance in their allocated area.
Our Technician Instructor (Maritime & Offshore Safety):
- Teaches theory and practical for STCW and other courses such as lifeboat and Sea Survival (this includes actually instructing in the boats at our pier head and getting in the water at the pool!)
- Manages their allocated area of equipment responsibility with attention to Health and Safety policy and regulation compliance. This includes comprehensive electronic documentary record keeping and liaison with other technical maintenance, academic and management staff
- Undertakes routine planned and preventive maintenance on maritime and survival equipment within their allocated area of responsibility
- Organises maintenance and liaises with contractors for maintenance of maritime equipment which cannot be undertaken in house
- Obtains quotations for purchasing of new equipment and liaises with suppliers during the procurement process
- Is part of the lifeguard team during pool-based survival exercises
- Is part of the site duty first aid team
The successful candidate:
You don’t have to be an experienced maritime instructor (although it certainly helps if you are!) – first and foremost we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated maritime professional to join our team - who has experience of boat handling operations, ideally the commercial marine industry and wherever possible, the maintenance of maritime and survival equipment. You will be fully computer literate with MS Word and Excel and be able to produce supporting documentation for your technical area.
As this job role also involves pool courses (Survival), you must be a confident swimmer and due to the nature of moving between facility sites, the successful applicant will also hold a full UK driving licence and be able to drive vehicles on University business. Very occasional unsocial hours and UK/international travel may be required as we periodically undertake consultancy work away from our Warsash campus base.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to present a 10min presentation (MS PowerPoint based) discussing:
Methods of ensuring compliant maintenance activities within maritime safety training.
And be able to answer any questions from the interview panel regarding the presentation.
