Seafarers travelling to Switzerland in the New Year who want to find out more about inland navigation can visit the Hafenmuseum in Basel, which is holding an exhibition commemorating the first issue of a Swiss Rhine boatmaster's certificate.
The special exhibition, called 100 years of the Swiss Rhine boatmaster's licence - Ernst Reimann, shows the life and family history of the person who first received such a licence.
On Sunday 9 February 2025, the last day of the exhibition, visitors can also join a discussion with Ernst Reimann's granddaughter, Ruth Vogt, and her husband Hugo Vogt, who built a model of the ship Rheinfelden, which will also be available to view during the exhibition
The Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) adopted the first international agreement on boatmaster certificates over a century ago on 14 December 1922. Each vessel has to be commanded by a boatmaster possessing a Rhine boatmaster's licence.
The CCNR has continued developing safety regulations for Rhine navigation personnel. These regulations define the certificates and qualifications required by navigation personnel aboard freight or passenger vessels. They also concern crew composition: deck and engine room crew members, safety personnel on passenger vessels, and personnel aboard craft using LNG.
