Chiltern Marine will no longer be acting as a training provider to Merchant Navy cadets.
Existing cadets are being transferred to SSTG as their new training provider, with Chiltern supplying cadet details and supporting the transition.
So far, Nautilus hasn’t received any complaints from cadets about the transfer. However, if you are experiencing any problems and need help or advice, please do get in touch with cadet organiser Rachel Lynch for assistance.
Ask the expert – academic struggles
Q: I'm struggling with the academic work that's part of the cadetship. What should I do?
A: As a Merchant Navy cadet, you'll be expected to reach certain standards in your work in order to progress.
Ultimately, it's your responsibility to learn the material and to achieve passing grades in your exams. MCA pass marks are high and there aren't unlimited paid opportunities to retake exams (though you may be able to pay for resits), plus sea time phases can add a lot of pressure, so this can be daunting for some cadets.
If you are struggling with your academic work though, your college is supposed to help and advise you. For example, if you've failed an exam, your lecturer might get in touch to discuss your options.
If your college isn't delivering the teaching that you need or isn't helping you after you've asked for assistance, that may be a matter for the Union, so please do contact us in that case.
