Free guidance documents published by Merchant Navy Training Board
28 March 2024
The UK Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) has published three new 'good practice' guidance documents for onboard training at sea, which are available to download for free.
Developed by a working group consisting of industry representatives, the three documents cover guidance for cadets, designated shipboard training officers and companies, training management companies, and company training officers.
The Guidance for Cadets document will be most useful for Nautilus members going through their Officer of the Watch training. It is designed to provide helpful information and tools during sea time phases of training, and includes details of everything from what you should pack to your rights as a seafarer. It lays out what your responsibilities should be onboard, and also covers and what should be done for you by your training provider/training officer.
The documents are available to download on the MNTB website.
Nautilus head of Professional & Technical David Appleton said: ‘We welcome the publication of this revised guidance which was long overdue. The documents set out very clear expectations as to what is expected of each party involved in the cadet training process, which should help cadets make the most of their time at sea and also give them confidence to speak up if something is not as it should be.’
