Hundreds protest in Cairnryan to support sacked P&O Ferries crew

23 March 2022

Hundreds of people gathered today in Cairnryan, Dumfries and Galloway, to show their solidarity with the 800 seafarers laid off by P&O Ferries last week, as the company attempts to replace the experienced UK-based seafarers with agency workers.

Workers and union members, including members of Nautilus International and the RMT, assembled from midday at the P&O ferry terminal in Cairnryan, where they heard speeches from Nautilus head of industrial Micky Smyth and RMT regional organiser for Scotland Gordon Martin.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has warned P&O Ferries that if it continues its actions, the council will reconsider the company’s continuing participation in a potential partnership bid for a green freeport at Cairnryan.

The news comes as P&O Ferries rival Stena Line announced that it is adding a third vessel to the Belfast-Cairnryan route.
