Momentum is continuing to grow for a maritime apprenticeship initiative, as more than 20 UK employers have now pledged commitment to the scheme, launched by the Maritime Skills Alliance in June.

Supported by Nautilus and an initial group of six major employers, the scheme now has increased to include:

  • A&P Group
  • Babcock International
  • BAE Systems Maritime
  • Berthon
  • Cammell Laird
  • DFDS Ferries
  • Hensoldt
  • Maritime & Coastguard Agency
  • Northern Lighthouse Board
  • Oarsome Chance
  • Pendennis Yachts
  • Princess Yachts
  • QinetiQ
  • RNLI
  • Royal Fleet Auxiliary
  • Royal Navy
  • Serco Marine
  • SMS Towage
  • Svitzer
  • Trinity House

Secretary to the Maritime Skills Alliance Iain Mackinnon said he had written to the UK maritime minister Kelly Tolhurst, who is supporting the scheme, updating her on the new pledges, and encouraged more maritime employers to come forward and support the scheme: 'Momentum is building very nicely; please do encourage others to sign up.'

Mr Mackinnon said he hoped companies committed to apprenticeships, but which might be hesitating over running the next recruitment round, will take encouragement from the increased pledges and encourage other companies to make the same decision.
