3 April 2024

Captain Don Marcus, president of Nautilus Federation affiliate the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P), has spoken in support of the pilots onboard the cargo ship M/V Dali, which collided with the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, USA.

In a statement, Capt Marcus expressed the union's deepest sympathy to the friends and families of those who lost their lives as a result of the March 26 2024 tragedy.

'We stand together in support of all those impacted by this unprecedented event,' he said.

'As announced by the NTSB [US National Transportation Safety Board], the pilots of the M/V Dali did everything possible to avoid this tragedy. Made evident by the NTSB's outline of events, the quick, decisive actions taken by the Maryland pilots on the ship and their team on shore following the total power blackout are a testament to their rigorous training and expertise. The pilots' ability to swiftly respond to unforeseen circumstances certainly saved lives.

'On behalf of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots, AFL-CIO, I commend these professionals for performing at the highest level of industry standards under such devastating circumstances.'

Investigators are still establishing the cause of the collision. More than 20 seafarers currently remain onboard the vessel.
