Nautilus signs letter calling on the UK government to eliminate anti-LGBT+ discrimination
19 July 2021
Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson has signed a letter from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) calling on the UK government to not only promote equality and eliminate discrimination against LGBT+ people, but to also take a lead in building an inclusive culture that supports LGBT+ people.
The letter addressed to Liz Truss, Women and Equalities Minister, calls for the government to:
- Introduce a new duty on employers to protect workers from harassment by customers and clients
- Create a specific duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment
- Reinstate employment tribunals' powers to make wider recommendations to employers to root out systemic failings and cultures of bullying and harassment
- Recruit a new LGBT Advisory Panel with a clear mandate and trade union representation
The letter also calls for an immediate ban on all forms of conversion therapy and for a simplified, free, statutory gender-recognition process based on self-declaration.
Each year the TUC runs a campaign to coincide with Pride in London and the TUC LGBT+ Conference in July.
Alongside the letter, the TUC will be releasing a Megaphone petition, a social media campaign and a series of webinars in August.
More information, as well as the full letter can be found on the TUC website.
