Nautilus wins TUC award for campaigning 'Off Course' pod

3 October 2024

Nautilus International, the global trade union for maritime professionals, has been awarded the 2024 Trades Union Congress (TUC) Communications Award for 'Best Communication from a Smaller Union' for its podcast series, Off Course: A Sideways Look at Life at Sea.

The annual TUC Communications Awards recognise outstanding efforts by unions in engaging with their members and the wider public. Nautilus International's Off Course podcast stood out among the competition for its creative approach to highlighting the unique challenges faced by maritime workers, bringing expert insight into an often-overlooked sector.

Launched in early 2023, Off Course delves into the lesser-known aspects of life at sea and shines a light on issues that often go unreported in mainstream media, while also providing an engaging and accessible platform for members to share their personal experiences.

The pod is part of the union's ongoing commitment to raise awareness of the valuable role its members play at sea.

Nautilus International general secretary Mark Dickinson accepted the award on behalf of the union at the ceremony in London. He praised the podcast's ability to reach both members and the public, offering a fresh perspective on maritime life while advocating for improved working conditions for seafarers globally.

'We are honoured to receive this recognition from the TUC,' Mr Dickinson said. 'This award is a testament to the team's hard work and dedication in producing content that is engaging and informative but also supports our campaign for better conditions for maritime professionals.'

Judges of the TUC award noted that Off Course had succeeded in not only amplifying the voices of maritime workers but also raising awareness about critical industry issues in an engaging format.

The Off Course podcast can be found on major streaming platforms, with new episodes released monthly, ensuring maritime stories reach both those at sea and onshore. Season three is now also available on YouTube via NautilusTV.
