Seas of opportunity: WISTA UK and Maritime Educational Foundation empower female cadets
8 March 2024
WISTA UK and Maritime Educational Foundation (MEF) have announced a new initiative to help empower female Merchant Navy cadets on International Women’s Day 2024.
MEF will fully fund Merchant Navy cadet training for five young women and girls chosen by a panel of WISTA UK members and former Merchant Navy officers, who will also provide successful applicants with mentoring and career guidance.
Both deck and engineering cadetships are available through the scheme.
WISTA mentor and master mariner Helene Peter-Davies, who is also a member of Nautilus International, said the partners are keen for cadets to get experience on a wide variety of vessels as part of their training.
The partners will also work to ensure a pathway into employment for the newly-qualified cadets, a known barrier for many, Ms Peter-Davies told Nautilus at a WISTA event in London to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024.
The cadets will be sponsored by training provider SSTG. For more information and to apply, go to the Maritime Educational Foundation website.
