A contingent of Nautilus members, officials and a Bevis Minter Award recipient represented the Union at the 2024 Annual National Service for Seafarers (ANSS) at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Wednesday 9 October.
The ANSS is held annually and organised by The Seafarers' Charity and Trinity House. Bevis Minter Award recipients are traditionally invited to attend the service along with other members and officials. This year's awardee, Scarlett Barnett-Smith, was accompanied on this occasion by four senior Nautilus officials – Nautilus deputy general secretary Olu Tunde; Nautilus head of industrial Micky Smyth; the Union's director of welfare and care Andrew Jones; and director of organising Martyn Gray who was also there representing The Seafarers' Charity. Nautilus Council was represented by member Captain Stephen Gudgeon.
Also in attendance to honour those who serve at sea was HRH The Princess Royal. At the reception afterwards, maritime minister Mike Kane pledged to champion better working conditions in the industry, The Seafarers' Charity reported.
The service was first held in 1905 and 119 years later it continues to reflect on, celebrate and express gratitude to seafarers across all the maritime professions. Representatives attend from the Royal and Merchant Navies, the commercial world, shipping companies, nautical colleges, maritime youth groups, veterans' associations, and those who support seafarers ashore. The public is also welcome to attend.
This year commemorated the 200th Anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and the 50th Anniversary of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association.
