Inflation-busting pay wins for members

20 November 2024

Nautilus's industrial department has been fighting to achieve pay uplifts for members – with some big wins in 2024 that underscore the financial value of Union membership for seafarers. Director of organising Martyn Gray presents the figures

In a year marked by political and economic uncertainty, Nautilus International has stood as a beacon of strength and support for our members. As a leading global maritime trade union, we have worked hard to protect the rights and interests of seafarers worldwide.

Collective bargaining: securing fairer pay

2024 has been a year of strong results in collective bargaining. Nautilus International has secured substantial pay increases for its members, often exceeding inflation rates. The average pay uplift across all sectors was a remarkable 5.9%, translating to a real-terms gain of 4.2%. This means that, even after accounting for inflation, members have experienced a boost to their earnings.

Our success in negotiations has been particularly impressive in sectors such as Renewables, Coastal, and Harbour, where pay increases have outpaced the industry average. Even in sectors facing economic challenges, Nautilus International has secured fair deals, ensuring that members are not left behind.

Individual support

Beyond collective bargaining, Nautilus International has provided invaluable individual support to our members. In 2024, the union has assisted over 1,300 members with a wide range of issues, from wage disputes and contract issues to bullying, discrimination, and mental health concerns.

For superyacht crew, the union has been a lifeline, helping members navigate complex employment contracts, recover unpaid wages, and address issues related to working conditions and safety.

In the Merchant Navy, Nautilus International has fought for fair treatment, ensuring that members are protected from unfair dismissal, disciplinary action, and other forms of workplace injustice.

Clout to make your work pay

The Union's efforts have helped to ensure that our members are always compensated for the work that they do. Over £1.1 million has been recovered in unpaid wages and secured through industrial settlements. This money has directly benefited members, helping them to support their families and improve their quality of life.

Ongoing dispute

2024 has been a year marked by both significant pay uplifts and historic industrial action by members.

As the Telegraph goes to press, Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) officers are still involved in their series of historic strike actions due to the long-running dispute over pay and conditions at the RFA. This is the first time in the RFA's 120-year history that officers have taken industrial action, motivated by the imposition of an award for 2023/2024 that fell far short of member expectations as well as inflation.

The dispute continues, with members returning a 97% vote in favour of industrial action short of a strike and 90% in favour of strike action (see pages 24-25). This protracted dispute will continue until, with the support of the Union, members achieve an offer that they find satisfactory.

Looking to the future

Nautilus International's commitment to those we represent is unwavering. The Union continues to invest in its services, ensuring that we can provide the highest level of support to seafarers around the world. By strengthening our collective bargaining power and innovating in how we deliver for members, Nautilus International is poised to deliver greater benefits in the years to come.

In a world that can often feel uncertain and increasingly hostile, Nautilus International offers a safe harbour for seafarers. Through membership, maritime professionals can rest assured that they have a powerful advocate fighting for their rights and empowering them to protect their livelihoods.
