A fun quiz has been launched by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to test our knowledge of ports, maritime affairs and IMO instruments ahead of the Day of the Seafarer.
For the annual event on 25 June, IMO is encouraging everyone to join the campaign and support this year’s theme that 'Seafarers Matter' with a focus on those responsible for the world’s ports and seafarer centres.
The annual day is also the start of Seafarers Awareness week, when Nautilus plans to formally launch its findings from a study into crew communications.
Each answer in the IMO quiz provides further educational maritime facts — such as which international treaties cover regulations on hours of work and rest for seafarers.
Those responsible for the world’s ports and seafarer centres have been encouraged to demonstrate how much seafarers matter to them on a new virtual world map which showcases best practice, and helps celebrate the unique contribution of seafarers in bringing us 95% of the world’s goods. Seafaring charities, port welfare centres and maritime education groups have used the map to show where seafarers can get free wifi, free shuttle buses for cruise crews, rent bicycles, or even — if they have the energy or time — where to take part in marathons while in port.
As in previous years, the Day of the Seafarer campaign is centred on social media, so join the movement and show your support online using the hashtag #SeafarersMatter. You can also share your quiz results on Facebook and Twitter.
