Getting a mortgage can often be a challenge for seafarers because of their employment arrangements, but the Union can now offer a mortgage broker service tailored for members — through its Nautilus Plus deals and discounts service.
Mortgage brokering is provided by Lighthouse Advisory Services through Nautilus Plus to help members throughout the entire mortgage application process.
Nautilus head of strategic development Steven Gosling said the Union has negotiated this new service to tackle problems faced by members who have experienced difficulties in securing mortgages because of the nature of their employment.
‘We have ensured that brokers understand how seafarers are often at sea for months, made them aware of typical income tax arrangements, and the fact that some of our members may not necessarily be paid monthly or in pounds sterling, or may not be employed by a UK company,’ explained Mr Gosling.
The new service has been developed in response to the findings of the Union’s 2015 membership survey, in which members were consulted on the benefits and services provided by Nautilus.
Mr Gosling said members could save a considerable amount of money, and a lot of time and trouble, by speaking to Lighthouse Mortgage and Protection Solutions, as they have a number of independent mortgage advisers based throughout the UK who can help with enquiries and understand the unique challenges facing seafarers.
